A little piece of the Caribbean in RJ

Angra dos Reis has 365 islands, one for each day of the year. In addition to our sweetheart Big Islandtake a walk to the Cataguases Island is a trip to the Caribbean without leaving the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

also called Cataguas Island, it is one of the closest to the mainland, which makes the boat trip very easy even for those who are in the center of Angra. On the other hand, this makes the islet a very touristy place.

Because it is very close to Angra dos Reis and is also on the itinerary of tours that depart from Ilha Grande, Cataguases Island can get quite crowded on certain days.

In this post, in addition to talking about what to do there and the attractions of the small island, we give tips on when to go to avoid overcrowding.

Now let’s talk about this paradise… imagine a very small and white sands, but surrounded by a clear sea, with shades ranging from blue to green. That’s the beauty of this place, one of the best beaches in Angra.

Here you don’t have to worry too much about what to do. Take the opportunity to relax, sunbathe and bathe in these calm waters with virtually no waves.

On one side of the island is the area dedicated to the arrival of speedboats and boats. From there, in less than 10 seconds (that’s right!) you can walk to the beach on the other side of the island, which is reserved for bathers.

Right in front of this beach, is Pilgrim’s Island. This arm of the sea between the two islands has very calm waters and is shallow. Many people practice snorkel around here and even scuba diving due to the transparency of the water.

When I said that Cataguases Island was small, I really meant small. Although it has a certain vegetation, you can walk practically all over it and it will take you less than 20min. It’s just a good idea to avoid taking this turn by swimming so as not to go through the path reserved for the speedboats.

And it is because of the size, as I will say later, that it’s good to avoid the busiest days. Cataguás is too small to receive so many people and your tour can be a bit frustrating.

There are no tents or beach services around here. But usually some vendors put their coolers on the sand and sell some drinks. So it’s good to bring your sarong or towel in addition to a snack, depending on how long you’re going to be at the beach.

To avoid the frustrating crowding of the island, it is worth avoiding the high season of summer holidays, holidays and weekends. It is only 10 minutes by boat to the Center of Angra, which makes many people look for this beach.

We went in low season and on a weekday in May and it was pretty empty. If you want to know more about the period with less chance of rain and also on the issue of high and low seasonI suggest you take a look at this post about when to go to Ilha Grandewhich is valid here as well.
