exploring the historic center on foot

Florianópolis is much more than its wonderful beaches. Come with me and I’ll show you my Florianópolis travel itinerary through the historic center of Florianópolis!

How many days to visit Florianopolis

They say that it is impossible to know all the beaches of Florianópolis in a single trip.

Therefore, I recommend at least 1 week in Florianópolis to visit some of the main beaches and other interesting places such as:

  • Conceição Lagoon
  • Santo Antonio district of Lisbon
  • historic center
  • beaches
Conceição Lagoon.

For this little walk through the historic center in my travel itinerary in Florianópolis I suggest at least half a day.

Where to stay in Florianopolis

I stayed in downtown Florianópolis.

As I stayed in the city for a few days, I thought it was the best option to go to the beaches and visit other tourist attractions in Florianópolis.

I stayed at Faial Prime Suites. The room was very comfortable, the breakfast was correct and there was free parking. This item, for those of us with a rental car, was essential.

Oh! Daily price into account. Note 9.1 from Booking.com.

Suggestion of other hotels in the area that are a good option:

What to do on your itinerary in downtown Florianópolis

The places below can be visited on foot, as they are all close. I did this script in one afternoon.

XV de Novembro Square (or Figueira Square)

Praça XV de Novembro is more traditional in the historic center of Florianópolis.

In 1622, Vila Nossa Senhora do Desterro was founded here by the pioneer Francisco Dias Velho. Florianópolis was born from this village.

In the center of the square is the Figueira Centenária. Some say it dates from 1871!

The tree is surrounded by history and superstition, like taking a complete turn around it to attract money or marriage. I did… it will work!

The fact is that the tree was very old and full of struts for support.

In addition to the imposing fig tree, Praça XV de Novembro is well wooded. Of course I loved it, right?

Florianopolis Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Florianópolis is located in Praça XV de Novembro.

The cathedral

It was built by the pioneers in 1678, with the name of Cathedral of Nossa Senhora do Desterro.

I found its simple interior, worth a visit.

Cruz e Souza Palace – Historical Museum of Santa Catarina

Palácio Cruz e Souza was the favorite program on my travel itinerary in Florianópolis through the historic center.

Located in front of the cathedral, this palace was for decades the seat of the government of Santa Catarina. Today it houses the Santa Catarina Historical Museum.

Detail of the interior of the building

The building is beautiful, although the interior was in need of some restoration. It is estimated that it was built in 1785.

On the 2nd floor there are rooms furnished in the original style of the very nice palace.

The entrance is cheap. See price and timetable information on the website.

Boardwalk of Conselheiro Mafra and Felipe Schmidt streets

This boardwalk is formed by two pedestrian streets with popular commerce.

For anyone who wants to do some shopping.

It’s also worth it if you like architecture, as there are several old houses.

Largo da Alfândega Fair

In the square in front of the old Alfândega building (hence its name) there is the Largo da Alfândega market.

It’s a craft fair, good for buying a souvenir.

Florianopolis Public Market

I just love visiting a public market!

The Florianópolis Public Market was close to my hotel and was where I had lunch.

There are several restaurants with tables scattered around the central area of the market.

By the way, Box 32 is here, a very famous and award-winning bar in Florianópolis. They say it has the best pastel in town.

I found the price of the menu a bit salty and ended up choosing to have lunch at another restaurant. But here’s the tip. 🙂

The Florianópolis Public Market is super old (from 1898) and, without a doubt, one of the main tourist attractions in the historic center of Florianópolis.

In 2005, a fire destroyed part of the building, which was rebuilt and remodeled.

In addition to the restaurants, there are shops selling various products, vegetables, fish, etc.

For those who also enjoy this type of program, I recommend visiting the Mercadão de São Paulo and the Mercado Público de Curitiba.

Complementing the itinerary in the Center of Florianópolis

I didn’t do this part of the tour, but I read several tips on other blogs.

If you want to stretch a little, you can walk about 20 minutes from the historic center and arrive at Avenida Beira-Mar Norte.

There is a nice boardwalk for walking or cycling, overlooking the famous Hercílio Luz Bridge.

When I was there in 2018, the bridge was under construction (searching I read that it has been renovated for years…).

Too bad the beach in the region is polluted. Anyway, there is no shortage of beaches and I recommend three beautiful beaches to visit in Florianópolis.
