The Mexican government has revoked the visa waiver for Brazilians who want to travel to the country, which had been in effect since 2004. Now a visa is required for mexicobut the good news is that the procedure is electronic and free.
It is worth mentioning that this ease of migration is only for tourists arriving by air. Those who enter the country by land or sea must present a physical visa.
How does the visa for Mexico work?
Since December 11, 2021, Brazilians who want to visit the country by plane will need a form of visa for Mexico, which is actually called a Electronic Authorization.
The form is easy to fill out online and must be completed 30 days before the date of travel.
For those who arrive by land or sea, you will need a physical visa in the passport.
Until that date, Brazilians did not need any type of visa to do immigration to Mexico. But as we listed in the post about entering the country, there were already several documents that facilitated the passage of agents.
How to fill in the Electronic Authorization Form for Mexico
The new Electronic Authorization Form is available on the website of the Institudo Nacional de Migración and must be completed 30 days prior to the date of travel.
But there are some exceptions, such as for those who have an American or Canadian visa, for example. See the next topic for all the details.
The page is in Portuguese and you will fill in personal data and travel information, such as dates and reason for entering the country.
In addition, there is a need to fill in some additional information, such as if you have been to Mexico, if you have been expelled and if you have a criminal record. In any case, filling out the form takes just a few minutes.
Main information requested in the form:
- Birth date
- marital status
- passport details
- Travel information (date, reason, etc.)
- Additional information (if you have visited the country, profession, etc.)
For example, if you will be traveling to Cancun in January, it is recommended that you complete the document in December, always 30 days before the departure date.
It is also worth gathering other documents so you don’t have problems, including travel insurance in times of a pandemic.
We talk about all of them in the post of documents for immigration in Mexico and tell our experience passing through the agents.
No need for a visa for Mexico
In some cases, Brazilians will not need to present the Electronic Authorization Form to enter Mexico. This happens for those who present any of the following documents:
- Document proving permanent residence in Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, any of the countries that make up the Schengen Area, as well as the member countries of the Pacific Alliance.
- Valid and current visa from Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland or any of the countries that make up the Schengen Area.
But if you still have doubts, it’s worth checking the website of Relaciones Exteriores de México.
Brazilians arriving by land or sea
Brazilian citizens who want to enter the country by land or sea must present the visa for Mexico physically in their passport. Whoever needs it, must request the document from the Mexican consular authorities.
For example, in these cases, the visa must be made at the Mexican consulates or the country’s embassy in Brazil.

The justification for returning the visa to Mexico
The Mexican government avoids using the word “visa” and guarantees that the Electronic Authorization is a way to facilitate immigration in the country.
According to the statement published in November 2021, the measure will help fight human trafficking networks.
According to the note, the decision is due to the increase in irregular flows of people, since criminal groups profit based on the interest of Brazilians in illegally migrating to the United States via Mexico.
In fact, according to US authorities, more than 46,000 Brazilian citizens were detained at the US-Mexico border between October 2020 and September 2021 alone.
The solution found was a new procedure for those who enter the country by air by filling in the form called Electronic Authorization for free. But Brazilians who enter by land or sea will have to present a physical visa.
The decision is provisional, but the Mexican government has not determined the validity of the measure.
Brazilians who arrive in Mexico by air can fill out the Electronic Authorization Form free of charge. Those arriving by land or sea must present a physical visa.
If necessary, a visa for Mexico can be applied for physically at the Embassy in DF, as well as at the consulates in SP and RJ. In fact, there are also honorary consulates in Belém, BH, Fortaleza, Manaus, Recife and São Luís.
As of December 11, 2021, Brazilians arriving by air must complete a free Electronic Authorization Form to enter Mexico. Those arriving by land or sea must present a physical visa in their passport.
Brazilians who have a valid and current visa from the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland or any of the countries of the Schengen Area. Or proof of residency in these countries as well as in Pacific Alliance member countries (learn more about exceptions).
We hope we have helped with the information about the new requirements. But as you can see, the procedure is simple.
