Tup Island: the island of bats in Thailand – Vou na Janela

Thailand has some unique places in the world, but one of them that is little known is Tup Island, but what is so special about this island? It is locally known as the Island of Bats.

Bat Island is located in the Andaman Sea, in southern Thailand, between the city of Krabi and Phi Phi Island, as you can see, the scenery is one of the most spectacular in the world. It is not inhabited by humans, it is a rocky island full of snakes, spiders and thousands of bats. But they are not simple bats, the species is Pteropus giganteus, known as the flying fox that lives throughout Asia and Oceania and can reach up to 2 meters in wingspan, the distance from tip to tip of the wings.

They are diurnal animals and when we got there, the island was calm. I don’t know if they noticed our presence in the sea, but suddenly they started to come out of every corner and the rock at the top of the island turned black with so many bats.

The scene is frightening, we have the clear impression that they will attack the boat and every minute more and more bats appeared. But they stayed there, in their corner. A biologist who was on the boat explained that they are not hematophagous, that is, they do not feed on blood, they only eat fruits and small insects. But there are recorded cases of attacks on small animals and humans.

The truth is that the image is frightening and you can perfectly understand why Thais avoid Tup Island, who would risk living or visiting a place full of snakes and giant bats?

If you want to see the island of bats, just take a long-tail from the AoNang port in Krabi to Tup Island, or take the 7 Islands Tour, which passes through islands such as Chicken Island and Khao Phing Kan, also known like James Bond Island, which was the setting for one of the English spy films.
