Where is it and how to get there?

One of the icons of Buenos Airesit is common for people to want to know where is it and how to get to the statue of Mafaldafamous character of the Argentine cartoonist Joaquin Salvador Lavado Tejonknown as quino.

The statue is a tribute to the artist’s most famous work, who gained fame in several countries, including Brazil, because of his comics. The character is known for being a questioning girl of the world.

+ What to do in the city


With only 80cm of height, the statue of Mafalda rests on a bench of a corner of San Telmocharming neighborhood of Buenos Aires, accompanied by her two friends, Susanite and Manolito. The cartoonist Quino lived in the region for a few years.

We went to the place on a Sunday, the day of the famous San Telmo Fair. Then we went looking for the character around the neighborhood. But after all, where is the statue of Mafalda? Yeah, I imagine that’s the exact address you want to know, right?

O Mafalda Monument stay in corner of Chile and Defensa streets. If you’re at the fair, you can walk, it’s less than 10min walk. To put it on your cell phone’s GPS, you can put the address as Defense 700.

Some nearby subway stations are: Independencia, Belgrano, Bolivar and Catedral, depending on which line you want to take.

This has become such a famous tourist spot in Buenos Aires, that it’s hard to get a picture with the character without face queues. On weekends they are even longer.

A few steps away, in Calle Chile 371a plate shows the building where Quino lived for a few years. The signage says that the house belonged to Mafalda, “a famous personage and Cultural Heritage of the city”.

The work is by the Argentine sculptor Pablo Irrgang, who was invited by the city government to pay homage to the character. The opening was in 2009 and since then it attracts many tourists.

the other characters Susanite and Manolito only arrived at the monument in 2014when Mafalda completed 50 years of her first comic strip publication.
